Spreading of liquids
and deposition of nanoparticles and surfactant assemblies on (nano)fibers, (nano)pores and substrate heterogeneities
Understand, model and predict the nanoscale mechanisms of spreading of complex liquids over substrate heterogeneities and elements of porous structure as well as mechanisms of deposition of nanoparticles and molecules at these structures.
Originality and innovative aspects: In most of theoretical works the transport and imbibition of liquid into porous media are considered using the effective medium approach. This method meets its limitations in the practically important situations where deposition of functional particles over surface heterogeneities and pores (WP 13), deposition of nanoparticles over fabrics (WP 10) or deposition of active substances in the skin tissue (WP 8) is of interest. An innovative aspect of the WP is the development of a model for description of liquid spreading and deposition of nanoparticles and surfactant molecules on single fibers, pores and surface heterogeneity elements as well nanoscale validation of the model. An important example is the interaction of liquid formulations containing cationic surfactant assemblies (quats) with solid heterogeneous substrates. Evonik, which is one of their largest manufacturers of quats, possesses an extensive know-how of their chemistry, formulation and applications.
Methodologies: The computations will be performed using the Volume-of-Fluid technique and Boundary Element Method with intermolecular forces described in the framework of Derjaguin disjoining/conjoining pressure. Coulomb attraction and evaporation will be accounted for. The model will be validated by comparison with the results of visualization of quats location by using fluorescence labelling and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy. The ESR will be recruited during the first 12 months by Evonik where he/she learns the complex fluid/solid interaction from industrial perspective. After that the ESR will be hired by TUD to develop theoretical/computational model.
