About the School
Following the first Winter School of the Complex Wetting (CoWet) Initial
Training Network (ITN) organized by Prof. Victor M. Starov at the
Chemical Engineering Department, Loughborough University (U.K.), the
first Summer School will take place at the Instituto Pluridisciplinar of
Complutense University, Madrid (Spain). In the previous school each node
of the ITN made a presentation of the research activities to be carried out
within the overall project, so that each Ph.D. or Postdoc student was aware
of the possibilities of collaborations and secondments. This school will
focus on a narrower field so that the fellows of the ITN will learn from the
basics to the applications of that field. In the Summer School the following
subject has been chosen: “Flows, Stability and Marangoni effects in fluids”
because it is on the basis of the ITN main interests: Wetting, spreading,
evaporation of fluids.
The school will include lectures describing basic aspects of flows,
instabilities, Marangoni effects, and contact angle hysteresis. These
concepts will be used for describing real systems such as the spreading and
wetting on complex substrates, the behavior of drops under high frequency
perturbations, the behavior of capillary waves and interfacial rheology.
This is a highly interdisciplinary field with a strong interaction between
Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics and Chemical Engineering.
